A year after high school I saw Ms. Debenardie again. I was working the night shift at the McDonald's drive thru. "Hi Wayne," a voice said.
I looked twice into the car. "Ms. Debenardie?"
"It's been a long time."
"How did you know me?"
"I remember all my kids."
"Wow. Hey, want a free apple pie?"
"I don't want to get you in trouble."
"It's no big deal. We give 'em out all the time."
"Yeah. No problem."
"What are you doing later? Want to catch up?"
"Sure. I get off about midnight."
"Okay. I'll come by then." She waved and drove off.
She never showed up.
Advice based on this principle:
- People are weird. Take it in stride.
- Don't take rejection or flakiness personally.
